Algae – The Black or Dark Streaks
Those tiger stripes running down the roof are usually algae, not dirt. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads in damp weather. It often starts as small dark dots, then turns into long streaks.
Algae holds moisture against the shingles and speeds up granule wear. Left alone, it often becomes the first stage before moss takes hold in the same spots. Soft washing kills it at the root. High pressure can blast the color off for a short time and still leave the growth alive.

Moss – The Green, Raised Growth
Moss is different. It isn’t just a stain. It is a plant that holds water like a sponge and sends roots into the surface of the shingles. From the ground it can look like a little green fuzz. Up close it is thicker, softer, and sitting in the joints and edges.
Moss is the one that causes real damage if you wait. It keeps the roof wet after the rain stops, lifts shingle edges, and dumps debris into the gutters. If you can see it from the street, it is already past the “just cosmetic” stage.
Soft washing is still the right method. Pressure washing a mossy roof is one of the fastest ways to strip granules and force water under the shingles.
Rust – The Orange or Brown Marks
Rust stains look different from algae and moss. They are usually orange, rust-red, or brown and often sit below metal — a vent, pipe boot, satellite mount, old nails, or a piece of flashing that is starting to corrode. Water runs over that metal and leaves a trail down the roof.
Rust is not growing like algae or moss. Cleaning can improve the look, but if the metal source is still rusting, the stain can come back. On some jobs the roof clean is only half the answer. The fixture or flashing may need attention too.

How to Tell Them Apart From the Ground
You don’t always need to climb the roof to get a decent read:
Long dark streaks that follow the water path are usually algae.
Raised green patches, especially in shade or along edges, are moss.
Orange or rust-colored trails under metal are rust.
A mix is common. Algae and moss often show up on the same roof.
If the roof looks “dirty” only on one side, that side is usually the shaded one. That pattern points to growth, not ordinary dust.

A homeowner in Camas called about “dirt streaks” and a few green spots on the north side. From the street it looked like one problem. On the roof it was three: algae streaks down the main slope, moss in the valley, and a rust trail under an old roof vent.
