Do Zinc Strips Actually Prevent Roof Moss in Vancouver WA?

Zinc strips get sold like a set-it-and-forget-it fix. In Vancouver WA they are not that. Rain running over a strip can slow moss on the slope below it. It does not clean what is already growing, and it does not cover every part of the roof.

I’ve been on Clark County roofs since 2020 (ProSoaks since 2022). I have seen strips that helped a sunny slope and valleys still packed with moss a few feet away. That is the honest version.

How They Are Supposed to Work

A zinc strip sits near the ridge. When it rains, a little zinc washes down the shingles and makes that path less friendly to moss. Protection follows the water. Where water does not run over the strip, you do not get the benefit.

Dormers, chimneys, and valleys can sit in a shadow. The far side of a valley may never see that runoff. A north slope under firs in Felida or Camas stays wet longer than the strip can fix by itself.

What They Do Not Do

They do not remove moss that is already there. If the roof is green, the strip is sitting on top of the problem. You still need the growth killed and cleared.

They do not replace roof cleaning. A low-pressure soft wash treats the moss and algae that are already rooted in. The strip, if you want one, is an add-on after the roof is clean — not a substitute.

They also wear down. Output drops over the years. A strip from ten years ago is not doing what the box promised.

Where They Help in Our Climate

On a simple gable, after a real clean, a strip can slow regrowth on the slopes the water actually hits. That is useful. It is not a three-year plan by itself.

Our 3-year moss-free warranty is on the soft wash, not on a piece of metal at the ridge. Shade, needles, and skipped gutter cleaning still feed the next cycle. Homes in Ridgefield and Salmon Creek with heavy fir cover see that gap the fastest.

Do zinc strips actually prevent roof moss in Vancouver WA? On some slopes, partly. On the whole roof, no.

Real Local Example

A homeowner in Camas had strips installed with a new roof and figured he was done. A few years later the south side looked decent and the north valley was thick. Water off the strip never really reached that valley. We soft washed the growth and told him the strip was a helper, not the maintenance plan.

He kept the strips. He stopped treating them like a warranty.

What I Would Do Instead

Clean the roof the right way when moss is visible. Keep gutters and valleys clear. Trim branches that hold a whole slope in shade if you can. If you still want strips after that, fine — just do not skip the clean because they are up there.

Pressure washing is not the backup plan. It strips granules and can void the shingle warranty.

Final Thoughts

Zinc strips can slow moss where rain actually runs over them. They do not clean a green roof, and they miss spots the water never reaches. In Clark County that is usually the shaded side and the valleys.
