Do Gutter Guards Mean You Can Skip Cleaning in Clark County?

What Guards Actually Do
A guard is a cover or screen over the trough. It keeps big leaves out. That is useful. It is not a seal against pine needles.
Needles are thin. They land on the screen, mat together when they get wet, and hold moss. Water cannot get through a matted screen. It runs over the front of the gutter the same way it does when the trough is packed.

Why Our Climate Wins
Firs drop needles all year. Shade keeps the roof edge damp. Moss grows on the shingles and sheds pieces onto the guard. Homes in Felida, Camas, Ridgefield, and Salmon Creek with heavy tree cover see this fastest.
A guard under a maple in a dry climate is a different product than a guard under a fir in Clark County. Same hardware. Different weather.
What We Still Find on Guarded Gutters
On a lot of these houses I pull a mat of needles off the screen, then still find grit and moss in the trough and a packed downspout. The guard hid the problem from the ground. It did not clear the pipe.
Overflow stains on the face of the gutter are the giveaway. If water is sheeting over the guard during rain, the system is clogged even if you cannot see the debris inside.
Guards vs a Real Clean
